Blatt 21 der lithografischen Folge "Szenen aus dem Leben Christi" von James Ensor (1860-1949). Im Bildmittelpunkt ein riesiges Kreuz, dass sich diagonal von links unten nach rechts oben erstreckt. Getragen wird dieses von einem Mann mit Dornenkrone, der mit schmerzverzerrtem Gesicht unter der Last fast zusammenbricht. Um ihn herum seltsame, karnevaleske Gestalten mit großen Masken. Eine dieser Gestalten trägt links das Ende des Kreuzes. Dicht über der Szene diagonal zum Kreuz ein geflügeltes Fantasiewesen. Signiert und datiert in der Platte links mit "Ensor 1917".
